I’ve started work on a small prototype sandstone carving. Unfortunately the sand in the stone is so abrasive that it blunts my tools within minutes. The photo below is my favourite (expensive) Italian riffler! After some trial and error, and consultations with other carvers, I have discovered that surform planes and aluminium oxide paper are the best for the job.
